If one doesn't get their primary kick often enough, they will be hit by severe demotivation and so-called frustration regression, leading to Wage Earner behavior. The Wage Earner is not an actual archetype but a behavior category that describes the behavior a demotivated employee exhibits. Frustration regression is often an unconscious compensation strategy. The employee feels the lack of their kick, feeling demotivated and unfairly treated. Meaning disappears along with joy, and the most important fire that burns within them, and they react to this. It usually manifests initially as visible dissatisfaction, loud complaining, rolling eyes, sulking, conflict-seeking behavior, etc. Then the next phase usually begins, typically a negotiation phase where the employee tries to compensate for the loss of motivation by demanding pay increases, more visible recognition, or irrelevant perks. The next phase is typically a resignation phase characterized by withdrawal, possibly increased sick leave, significantly less effort, and apathy. Finally, it often ends in behavior where the employee becomes excessively focused on maximizing their personal contribution-reward balance by adjusting their contribution downward, while the reward is attempted to be adjusted upward. Therefore, this behavior is called Wage Earner behavior, but it's crucial for the leader to remember that the Wage Earner is not an archetype. Wage Earner behavior is a symptom of severe demotivation and frustration regression, and it's often a sign that the employee has been motivated incorrectly concerning their archetype. In a working environment, recognizing and addressing this pattern is essential. Leaders must understand their team's individual motivations and find ways to energize and engage them, based on their archetype. Ignoring or mismanaging these signs of demotivation can lead to a decrease in productivity and overall morale, affecting the entire team or organization.
